María José (b.1991) completed a BA in Fine Art at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California in Tijuana and a MA in Fine Art at Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. Her research looks into the porous space between territory, language, limits, and the body, and how this space can be understood by extending the way they relate to each other as gestures in different materialities. By questioning how she inhabits certain boundaries as a woman, she is interested in studying remains and traces that administrative powers leave behind in unclear territories.

		<description>THE GATEWAY AS A POINT OF ENCOUNTER

&#60;img width="3600" height="2403" width_o="3600" height_o="2403" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/666a7130e5be142eaabc75a3c2e2db6f7175e1b0dfc485660097f743f2407d11/the-gateway_puntwg-6.jpg" data-mid="189873613" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/666a7130e5be142eaabc75a3c2e2db6f7175e1b0dfc485660097f743f2407d11/the-gateway_puntwg-6.jpg" /&#62;
‘The gateway as a point of encounter’ was a collaborative exhibition in puntWG, Amsterdam between artists María José Crespo and Madeleine Ruggi drawing upon the artists’ firsthand experiences visiting the Port of Amsterdam — a massive 4900-acre logistics hub handling some 100 million tonnes of international cargo traffic each year.
The experience of their own bodies gaining access to and being confronted with macrocosmic trading systems, territories, borders and port infrastructures is presented via Crespo and Ruggi’s separate methods of research, archive organisation and material experimentation. Crespo and Ruggi’s individual witnessing of the vastly connected world of commodity demand has resulted in this collaborative new body of work featuring sculpture, video, print, installation and sound.
This exhibition marks a shift in Crespo and Ruggi’s previous mode of research which had centred on audiovisual presentations, such as their performance lectures at the Royal College of Art, London (2021) and Kunstinstituut Melly, Rotterdam (2022).
For the finissage of The gateway as a point of encounter, Ruggi and Crespo gave a public performance lecture offering insight into their research methodologies and processes of material translation, which collated image, video, sound and reading.

The installation revolves around the story of avisadoras, female messengers who flashed messages with a vanity mirror across the border between Mexico and the USA during the Mexican Revolution (1910-17). Most of the avisos were daily life communication, but also warnings, for example, to inform of the approach of the early border patrol.

	Avisadores were usually men, but while researching the archive of W.D Smithers at the Ransom Center in Austin, TX., I came across an image referring to female avisadoras. Departing from this finding, I created a setting where avisadoras meet with other female figures marked by struggle and different communication strategies during times of conflict, mostly in remote landscapes, like women who fought in the Mexican Revolution. Their activities and gestures are embodied in the work through tools and structures that liberate and constrain their activities, like a teleprompter, bullet belts, and a telegraph. Such is the installation's structure, inspired by a Dutch optical telegraph model from the Rijksmuseum used to send coded messages over long distances.

	FLAWS IN NEGOTIATION WITH NON-COHESIVE SANDS

María José's exhibition Flaws in negotiation with non-cohesive sand unfolds in a series of structures informed by gestures that administer water and land at the border between Mexico and the United States. During her residency, Crespo explored on-site and in archives how different landscapes, objects, and mechanisms around the Rio Grande - Bravo are part of a history that can be expanded into multiple materialities and observed as diverse layers of experience in different settings. Flaws in negotiation with non-cohesive sand is an environment where clashing acts of self-governance and politics embedded in physical forms question the way history is displayed and therefore understood, contrasting the infrastructure of the space in itself with the intimacy that materials offer. The work in the exhibition experiments with possibilities through ethno-fictional methodologies of researching in archives as found objects applied to collage, video, and sculpture.&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp;stills from: Witnessing as a method of getting through gateways

First, one becomes an observer, then a mediator. Witnessing provides access to information about the realities and fictions on borders, territories, and the currencies and values to which bodies in these zones are subjected. Madeleine Ruggi and María José Crespo bring together their separate information processing within their artistic research by exchanging ideas and working methods in an audiovisual performance presentation. The presentation navigate through different ways of collecting information, and the translation of found material as research.
